CA$71.19 is the perfect number for a modern tragedy. It’s high enough to hurt, but just low enough that the conversational energy required to fight it costs more than the refund is worth.

It feels more and more that we’ve moved from a world of transparent transactions to a world of administrative shadows. It’s not a bill anymore; it’s a test where the only way to pass is to stop caring about the math. A look at the new daily frictions of 2026.

It was the math that truly struck me. Anthropic needs my $71.19? If I hadn’t been on deadline, I would have not paid and canceled my account. Which I did. Because the worst part of that $71.19 fee—I should have included this—was that the clock started on a two-hour OT window. You couldn’t pause it. So it was use it or lose it. At which point I lost my mind.

Maybe don’t fight the $71.19? Instead, send them a “strategic processing” invoice for the 45 minutes you spent thinking about their error. Rate it at your satirical consultant fee; let's say CA$450.00. When they inevitably ignore it, cite administrative precedence.

If the world is going to run on arbitrary digital fees, you might as well be the one collecting it. You aren't being overcharged; you’re being under-compensated for the content they provided you! (I bet they’d pay your invoice 😉)

I will do exactly that. I might up the rate some so they really pay attention.

Exactly! If they want the 'stewardship,' they have to pay the invoice.

Stay liquid, stay lethal, and let us know when the check clears!
